  65. This is a release of the Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E printer 
  66. driver with support for the HP LaserJet 4/4M printer, which 
  67. includes 600 dpi printer resolution, HP-GL/2, resident TrueType 
  68. font technology and the resident Intellifont typefaces.

  72. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS 3.1

  76. To install Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E printer driver version 
  77. 31.V1.08 for Windows 3.1:
  78.  
  79. NOTE:  If you intend to use HP Intellifont for Windows to
  80.     produce screen fonts for the Intellifont typefaces in the
  81.     HP LaserJet 4/4M, you must install Intellifont for Windows
  82.     BEFORE installing the printer driver.  Please refer to
  83.     the Intellifont for Windows instructions.
  84.  
  85. 1.  Choose the Control Panel from the Main Group in Program
  86.     Manager.
  87. 2.  Choose the Printers icon from the Control Panel window.
  88.     The Printers dialog box appears.
  89. 3.  Choose the Add button.
  90. 4.  From the List of Printers dialog box, select Install
  91.     Unlisted or Updated printer (first printer in list).
  92. 5.  Choose install.
  93. 6.  Insert the driver disk labeled HPPCL5E version V1.08 
  94.     into your flexible disk drive and specify the
  95.     WIN31DRV directory on your floppy disk to install
  96.     the Windows 3.1 driver.
  97. 7.  Highlight the "HP LaserJet 4/4M" line in the Add Unlisted
  98.     or Updated Printers dialog box and press [Enter].
  99. 8.  Choose Connect if the default port of LPT1 is incorrect.
  100. 9.  Highlight the correct printer port from the Ports list box
  101.     and press [Enter].
  102. 10. Choose Setup.
  103. 11. Make any necessary changes in the Printer Setup screen to 
  104.     reflect your printer's configuration.
  105. 12. Choose OK.
  106. 13. Choose Set as Default Printer if the LaserJet 4/4M is 
  107.     intended to be your default printer for all of your
  108.     Windows applications.
  109. 14. Choose Close.

  117. The Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E Printer Driver version 31.V1.08
  118. includes support for the HP LaserJet 4/4M printer and the 
  119. following new features:
  120.  
  121. Support for 600 dpi Printer Resolution.
  122.     The user can switch between 300 and 600 dpi printer 
  123.     resolution via the switch in the setup dialog of the
  124.     driver. 
  125.  
  126. Support for Graphics Quality.
  127.     At 600 dpi mode in the LaserJet 4/4M the driver
  128.     supports graphics resolutions of 600, 300, and 150 dpi.
  129.     At 300 dpi mode the driver supports 300, 150, and 75 dpi.
  130.     The actual graphics resolution settings are denoted by
  131.     the descriptive terms of Low, Medium, and High rather 
  132.     than the actual dpi.

  134. Support for the TrueType typefaces.
  135.     All the resident TrueType typefaces in the HP
  136.     LaserJet 4/4M printer are supported.  Other TrueType 
  137.     typefaces are supported by building outlines from
  138.     the typeface and downloading the characters needed on the
  139.     fly.  All of the internal TrueType typefaces in the HP
  140.     LaserJet 4/4M printer are supported in the 19U symbol set
  141.     with the exception of Wingdings in L$ and Symbol in AS.

  143.     Hewlett-Packard has made the TrueType format screen
  144.     fonts available for the 35 Intellifont format typefaces
  145.     in LaserJet 4/4M.  These screen fonts are available through
  146.     your local Hewlett-Packard dealer and are not included in 
  147.     this package.  TrueType equivalent screen fonts allow for a 
  148.     more closely integrated Windows 3.1 solution.

  150. Support for the internal Intellifont typefaces.
  151.     All the internal Intellifont typefaces in the HP LaserJet 
  152.     4/4M printer are supported in the 19U symbol set.  To obtain
  153.     WYSIWYG results, use HP Intellifont which supports
  154.     on-the-fly screen fonts to match your printer fonts in
  155.     Windows 3.1.

  157. Support for HP-GL/2
  158.     Support for HP-GL/2 is in version V1.08.  Under the Options
  159.     Dialog in the Printer Setup, a new option of "Graphics 
  160.     Mode" is available.  Two options are present:  HP-GL/2 or
  161.     Raster.  The first choice enables HP-GL/2 which will 
  162.     increase print performance but may possibly cause 21 Print 
  163.     Overruns in some applications. The second choice disables 
  164.     HP-GL/2 and uses raster only.  The default for Graphics Mode 
  165.     is HP-GL/2.
  166.  
  167.     If you do encounter print difficulties in the default
  168.     Graphics Mode, it is recommended that you change the 
  169.     mode to Raster and try your print job again.  Additional
  170.     information on this topic may be found in the help files
  171.     that accompany this driver.  Choose Help from the driver
  172.     dialog screens or the HP font installer screens to access 
  173.     the HELP information.

  175. Dialog Support for Resolution Enhancement technology
  176.     Another feature added to the Option Dialog is the
  177.     Resolution Enhancement technology box.  The options here
  178.     are:  Printer Default, Light, Medium, Dark, and Off.
